Rebelato Family From Loria Italy
The Rebbelato or Rebelato Family Tree of British Columbia came from the town of Loria, Treviso, Italy. So far I have researched the family back to Pietro Rebbelato, who was born around 1855. Pietro married Maria Luigia Piotto, date of marriage unknown. The first child, Maria Erina was born March 14, 1886 in Loria. Then Leandro Domenico was born February 10, 1890 in Loria. Not sure if he was stillborn or died in infancy. Then Basilio Domenico was born May 3, 1891 in Loria. The next child born is Leandro Giovanni March 22, 1893 in Loria. Again it looks like he was either stillborn or died in infancy. The next child born was Leandro Domenico, born April 9, 1895 and he later immigrated to Canada. The first two Leandro’s must have died in infancy, as there is no oral record of their being born. Then the last child born to Maria Luigia was Antonio Mario, born May 28, 1897. Sometime after Antonio’s birth, his mother Maria dies and Pietro, his father, remarries a Maria Moro. They then have two more children, Amabile Antonia, born January 22, 1901 in Loria. The last child born was Severino Antonio, born October 26, 1905 also in Loria.
My story of the Rebelato Family Tree starts out with the first brother who came to Canada in 1906; Basilio Domenico Rebelato. At the age of 15 he immigrates to Canada with three older men from his home town and their destination was Revelstoke BC. Basilio’s oral story is that they were Rebelato relatives, either uncles or cousins. These relatives were to later immigrate to South America, to meet up with relatives that were already there. In my research I found a whole group of Rebelato’s (Rebbelato) that immigrated to Brazil in the 1890’s and they are from the same town, Loria Treviso, Italy. With the size of the town Loria and the stories handed down, there is no reason why these Rebelato’s are not the same related Rebelato’s that Basilio spoke of.
According to Basilio’s passport and the ship manifest, he left London England on September 20, 1906 on the SS. Pomeranian and arrived in Quebec on October 3, 1906. As per the passenger log, he had $2.00 of cash on him and his designation was Revelstoke BC.
Basilio arrived in Revelstoke BC, where he eventually gets employment with the CPR. Per a prearrangement by a family friend, Basilio meets and marries Margaret Camozzi. Margaret was born in Priest River, Idaho on February 15, 1899 and moved to Revelstoke with her family in 1906. Basilio and Margaret were married, January 16, 1916, with Margaret’s written consent from her father Giuseppe. Later on in October 29, 1927 Basilio and Margaret got their Canadian Citizenship.
In Revelstoke, Basilio worked as a stationary fireman on the CPR. They had 5 children altogether, which three survived. The surviving children were (2 boys and 1 girl), Leo, Eva and Ernest. Basilio worked for the CPR until he retired at the age of 65 and died one year later on December 29, 1957 at the age of 66.
Three other Rebelato Family brothers eventually immigrated to Canada. First came Leandro in 1912, or as he was affectionately known – Nano . Family stories are that the ship Leandro immigrated on to Canada, set sail a few days after the infamous Titanic sailing. The captain of that ship, the SS Rouchmondeau announced the sinking at the dinner table. People were all in shock but one guest in particular kept on eating his dinner like nothing happened. The captain gave him a slap on the back of the head and told him to have a little more respect. This could all be true as Leandro’s ship left April 13 1912, three days after the Titanic’s sailing as the Titanic sunk on April 14, 1912. Leandro also settled in Revelstoke and worked for the CPR. After he retired he went back to his home town of Loria in Italy and died there sometime in the late 60’s.
The second brother to come over to Canada was Antonio Mario or Mario as he was known by. Mario immigrated to Canada in 1923 and his ship set sail September 7, 1912 by the SS Giulio Cesare and arrived in Quebec on September 19, 1923. Mario, too, was heading out to Revelstoke to live with his brother Basilio and got employment with the CPR. Mario was later married and moved back to Italy after he retired. Mario died sometime in the 1970’s.
The youngest brother Severino Antonio immigrated to Canada in 1927. He traveled on the SS Montroyal and arrived in Canada on April 27, 1927. Severino was also heading to Revelstoke to live with his brother Basilio. Severino also got a job with the CPR and married Mary Sirianni on April 20 , 1928 in Revelstoke BC. He died November 24, 1937 in Revelstoke, BC after an appendicitis operation; his appendix ruptured.
