The Giuseppe Camozzi Family Tree
The Giuseppe Camozzi Family Tree came from a 100 miles north of the city of Bergamo in the ancient village of Druogno, close to the Italian Swiss border. Druogno (altitude 835 m.) is the first center encountered while traveling on the state road that extends from Italy to Switzerland. Four such Italian groups to the Netherlands (chimney sweeps, mosaic workers, makers of plaster figures and ice-cream vendors) demonstrated how the demand of their trades have shaped their social histories. The Camozzi’s were one of those families.
Giovanni Battista Camozzi was born in 1826 in Como, Italy. He married Maria Margherita Vietti who was born in 1835 at Druogno Italy and they settled in Druogno Italy. Giovanni worked as a coppersmith and at some point he worked his trade in Amsterdam, Holland. They had 6 children in the following order, Pietro, Giuseppe Emanual, a daughter Giovanina, Eugenio Antonio, a second daughter Lucìa and Severino Jacomo Antonio. Giovanni died in Druogno in 1900 and Maria died in 1921. Two of the sons immigrated to Canada and United States Giuseppe Emanual and Severino Jacomo Antonio. These are the two sons that I have done research on and have dedicated a page to each of them on this web site.
Giuseppe Camozzi was born March 27, 1864 at in Druogno, Italy. Giuseppe worked as a bartender on a boat travelling to the East Indies and South America. Then he returned to Holland and immigrated to the U.S. in 1885. He worked for a while as a Foreman on the Northern Pacific Railway. Giuseppe paid his future wife Carmina Veltri, fare from Italy to the United States so they could be married. She was born June 25, 1874 in Calabria, Italy and they wed in 1892 in Spokane Washington. They had eight children born in the U.S. in the town of Priest River, Idaho where they homesteaded on an 80 acre farm.
The 1900 US Census list Giuseppe Camozzi and family lines 79 to 84. It lists Guiseppe as a Farmer his year of birth as 1864, immigration as 1885 and was married in 1893. Some time before he moved his family to Canada in 1906, he came up to Canada and worked at the Nanaimo Coal Mine and the Hedley Mine. Guiseppe also worked in the Sandon Mine in the Kootenays. Around this time, Guiseppe took out his Canadian naturalization papers. Then he moved his family to Revelstoke, BC where he went to work for the C.P.R. He worked on the Rogers Pass in 1910, when 66 people were killed in the dreadful Rogers Pass Slide. The Camozzi family lived in the area of the Gallicano Bakery when they first came to Revelstoke and later bought a home on the corner of Fourth and Edward Street.
In the 1911 Canadian Census lines 23 to 31 it list Giuseppe Camozzi as Railroad Helper and his year of birth listed as 1864. Then in 1917 he moved his family south to Mt. Cartier to the 80-acre farm that was granted to his father-in-law Fransico Veltri in 1905.
Carmina’s parents, Fransico and Josephine Veltri (Nacarrato), arrived in Revelstoke from Italy in 1898, coming into this area by boat, up the Arrow lakes. They lived for a short, time in town and then purchased the land in 1905 in the Mt. Cartier area, where they built their farm house and cleared the land. This was about 7 miles south of Revelstoke. With only a wagon trail to get to town, supplies often came down by the old Arrowhead train.
Giuseppe Camozzi and his family farmed there until 1952. The farm house that Guisseppe built was later moved up to the town of Revelstoke before the building of the Mica Dam and the settlement of Mount Cartier was flooded. While living in Mount Cartier Guisseppe worked at Three Valley as a road foreman for the Department of Highways.
After immigrating to Canada 5 more children were born, and in 1935 Carmina had a stroke and was moved to Revelstoke. She died in their former home on Fourth and Edward Street at the age of 75 April 26, 1949. The farm was turned over to their daughter Margueita as she looked after it with her father Guiseppe along with her husband Basilio. Guisseppe died in Vernon March 13, 1956.
